This wine is made from Koshu, Japan’s indigenous wine grape which can be traced back to 1186. It is a beautiful pink skinned grape. Koshu was discovered growing wild at Katsunama in Yamanashi prefecture, and is since making a name for itself in Japan.
Chateau Mercian is the oldest established winery in Japan, starting out in 1870 having sent two young men to France to understand winemaking in the European tradition. The descendants of these two men are still growing Koshu for Mercian today.
The Gris de Gris spends 3 weeks on skins to achieve the vibrant apricot coloured pink. This is followed by 8 months in oak barrels, to make a very unique and full rose.
